Knowledge is Power
Joseph While is an Anglo-Welsh artist who was raised in North Wales.
He studied in Britain and France, and during this time he frequented art museums across Europe, studying the work of the Old Masters and antique sculpture. In 2022 he completed the extensive program at the Osaka Drawing Research Institute becoming the first non-Japanese artist to complete the full program in the institute’s illustrious 80-year history and has subsequently begun to embark on a teaching career and journey of personal artistic development.
With a focus on portraiture and figuration, truth to nature, the pursuit of beauty, grace, movement and tension are the driving themes of his work. Joseph has received numerous awards and participated in many group shows in Europe and Japan. He currently lives and works in Osaka (Japan).

An Endless Quest
Every work presents a learning curve, pose research from life and the imagination, value composition, colour composition, preparatory drawings, and non-visual research, including reading and studying, are the foundation of the process.
A Kind of Dance
The model arrives ideas are exchanged, movement is the key, the ebb and flow, tension and relief, a kind of synergy arises, We move in unison, in harmony with the moment in tune with life.
